HOW TO STITCH A NIGHTY

Nighty is a loose dress that is often stitched with cotton, or satin fabrics. The construction and method of stitching a basic nighty is given below. For a tutorial on how to stitch a nighty with yoke, check out this post.

Material required: Twice the nighty length + 1 sleeve length

Measurements needed

Length
Chest
Waist
Waist length
Waist
Shoulder
Sleeve length
Round arm
Round neck
Front neck
Back neck

Method

First open the cloth and fold in the reverse such that the two selve edges are on top of each other. Then fold again as shown. You will now have 4 layers of cloth one on top of the other.

Using the measurements given below make a paper draft or mark directly on the cloth.

0 to 1 - nighty length + 2” (extra for folding)
0 to 2 – 1/6 chest + 1”
2 to 3 – ¼ chest + 2”
0 to 4 – half shoulder
4 to 5 –½ “
0 to 6 – 1/6 round neck + ½”
0 to 7 – back neck (3”)
6 to 8 – front neck
0 to 9 – waist length
1 to 11 – full cloth width
11 to 12 – 1”
9 to 10 – ¼ waist +2”

After marking the measurements on the cloth, cut the cloth leaving 2” stitching allowance at the bottom and ½” at the neck, arm hole and shoulders and 1” at the sides and cut the cloth.

For the sleeves, use the construction given below and cut the sleeves. Check out how to stitch a sleeve for the method and diagram.

0 to 1 - sleeve length
0 to 2 - 1/12 chest + 1/2"
2 to 3 - 1/6 chest + 2"
1 to 4 - 1/2 round arm + 1"

Now start by stitching at the shoulders and then finish the neck. You can select the pattern of neck of your choice. For the method on how to stitch the neck part, check out this page. Once the neck part is completed, start by stitching the sleeves to the arm holes. Once done, stitch at the sides starting from the sleeve ends all the way till the bottom. Double fold the cloth at the bottom and stitch. Turn the cloth to the reverse and overlock the edges so that the threads do not come out. Your nighty is now ready.
